Artona series dining table by Afra & Tobia SCARPA for Maxalto, Italy 1975
Dining table designed by the design-duo Afra and Tobia Scarpa. Italy, Maxalto, 1975.
Large round table with black inlay, solid wooden edges with walnut inlays. These edges became iconic for this series of tables and still looks absolutely fantastic today. Square wooden base with vertical walnut inlays and metal detail on the bottom edge. The table leg is reinforced with the original Maxalto concrete weight giving the table stability.
The Artona series was one of the first product lines to be released by the newly set up high-end division of B&B Italia, focusing exclusively on the production of artisanal, and mostly wooden furniture.
Afra & Tobia Scarpa, born in 1937 and 1935 respectively, were Italian architects and designers whose partnership shaped the landscape of postmodern design. Both graduates of the Università Iuav di Venezia, they married and opened a design office in Montebelluna in 1960. Renowned for their innovative use of materials and deep respect for craftsmanship, they created iconic works such as the Bastiano sofa, Coronado sofa for B&B Italia, and the Soriana armchair for Cassina—awarded the Compasso d’Oro. Their holistic approach to design spanned furniture, interiors, lighting, and architecture, leaving a lasting influence on global design.
Good vintage condition.
