Richard Woods was born in Chester in 1966. He studied at Winchester School of Art from 1985 until 1988 and the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London between 1988 and 1990. Woods was selected for the seventh Barclays Young Artist Award show at the Serpentine Gallery, London in 1991 and had his first one-person exhibitions at Hales Gallery, London in 1992 an 1994.
Since then he has shown extensively elsewhere in Britain as well as in continental Europe, Japan, Korea and the United States of America, with solo exhibitions and projects.
He has collaborated with important fashion houses designing the floor and furniture for the store interior. ‘Import/export sculpture’, Woods’s impressively large crazy paving of a cloistered courtyard, formed the centre piece of The Henry Moore Foundation Contemporary Projects’s Stopover exhibition at the 50th International Venice Biennale of Art in 2003, and he was one of nine artists chosen to represent the United Kingdom at the 2005 World Exposition in Japan.
